I had the pleasure of working with Melanie Riffee and Patrick Yocum of Boston Ballet on a recent photo shoot. We had costumes and accessories on loan from Goorin Bros. and Small Pleasures (both found on Newbury Street in Boston), Brett Bell of Urbanity Dance provided assistance, and we captured images with a variety of lighting techniques. Where did January go!? It was a blur of editing Nutcrackers, taking audition photos, shooting new shows, and planning for the year to come. I've accumulated a lot of images to share from a variety of projects and will be posting them here over the next few weeks.

Silje Marie Skålevåg Dance Portraits

After I photographed Silje last week I knew I had to feature her gorgeous extension and perfectly pointed feet somehow -and thus her image is now on the homepage of my website www.LizaVoll.com. For a look at the rest of her, see below. The last image gives a glimpse into the equipment outside the frame as well -3 dynalites with one power pack and a full body softbox for the main light.

Butternut Squash Soup

Butternut squash soup was on the menu for the day after Thanksgiving -thanks to Sarah for the recipe! The color of the cubed squash was so sumptuous it was calling out to be photographed.

Cube squash and spread on pans for roasting.

Add freshly ground pepper and small cubes of butter.

Maple syrup is a must!

Roast until tender.

Dice onions and saute in butter until lightly browned.

Add garlic, sage, and thyme.

Once the onions and herbs are mixed, add the roasted squash and chicken or vegetable broth.

Puree and garnish with plain yogurt or cream, parsley, and bacon for a savory finish. Yum!

Home for Thanksgiving

Vermont will always be my home. It was so nice to return to be with friends and family and of course, to feast! Cheers all around!

Crispy skin, tender meat -perfection.

I love any occasion that brings out the beautiful china.

NYTimes Nutcracker Slideshow

Temperatures have dropped here in Boston and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker music is starting to be heard from theaters around town. Over at the NYTimes, dance critic Alastair Macaulay has embarked on a trip to view productions all over the country. To accompany his report, readers were asked to submit their own photos from Nutcrackers they were in or attended to be posted in an online slideshow. Here's my submission of dancer Leticia Guerrero from Festival Ballet Providence's performance in 2009.

I had the pleasure of photographing senior dance students at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts as they prepared materials for upcoming college and dance company auditions. Love it when they can create the exact shapes and poses that I envision. Best of luck to them!
